Kassel, 17 November 1934 To the Secret State Police Kassel I, the undersigned, Max Hofmann of Kassel, Hohenzollern Street 114, submit a complaint in the following affair: Yesterday evening, at about 9:30 p.m. a large group of people assembled in front of the residence of my father, Levi Hofmann, in Gudensberg. The action was directed against my brother. They were yelling: Kill the dirty Jew.' As a result, a gendarme arrived to take my brother into protective custody. The reason given was that that afternoon, my brother had walked past Miss Moeller, a leader of the BDM [Nazi Girls Youth Movement] and had slapped her. My brother, Julius Hofmann rejects the accusations in the most basic way: He is not even aware of having seen Miss Moeller. He was taken by the gendarme and while being led away, he was hit in the face by SA man Jacob Schneider. It should be mentioned that for some time already the behaviour of the Moeller family has been hostile. A short while ago, for example, when the Moeller dog ran into my parents' yard, Mr. Moeller called it back, using the words: come right back, I have told you often not to go into that dirty Jew's yard.' Following this incident, I spoke to the Moellers' future son in law, Mr. Most of Gudensberg, who continues to buy in my store. I told him that if my parents are dirty Jews, I too am a dirty Jew, and that therefore it would be appropriate if in future he would not do his shopping at a dirty Jew's shop. I believe that this is the real reason behind yesterday's events. …My brother demanded of the gendarme, that having been taken into protective custody, he should be put in a cell where he will not be beaten. The gendarme told him to go away. My brother was chased by different people and ran into the fields in the direction of our parents' home. Miss Moeller was yelling: He is in the house, break the windows, get into the house.' The people broke into the house and destroyed the windows and doors. The following persons were involved: Kippli, Gonnermann, Ludwig Simon, August Kolbe, Sechtling. Kippli hit my 68 year old father, Levi Hofmann, with a club. Both my father and the servant witnessed Miss Moeller's call. I request that a thorough investigation be conducted and that evidence be collected at the site. Further possible witnesses are my brother's wife and mother in law, Mrs. Nagel of Niedenstein, who is visiting in Gudenberg.
Document 2:
Memorandum About 40 window panes were shattered at the house of 68 year old Mr. Levi Hofmann in Gudensberg. A crowd of people broke into the house, searched in vain for his son and then maltreated the 68 year old man. A criminal investigation is underway. For the moment, the courts are interrogating the witnesses and the accused. The alleged reason for the event was that the younger Hofmann made a certain sound just at the moment that a young girl was passing in the street. About two months ago, 75 year old Mr. Elias was attacked with no apparent reason by a resident of Gudensberg. Fifteen members of the Jewish community of Gudesberg were given tickets for traffic violations and are to pay 10 Marks each. They submitted complaints, but most of them cancelled them, because apparently the Local Party Head Herpener exercised pressure on them. They were called to his office and forced to take the complaint back (rubber clubs). During the hearing, in which the penalty was reduced to 5 Marks, the local gendarme Bierschenk testified that he had seen the Jewish residents standing in a group in the street for five minutes….
